Press Release, 4 November 2026
Taxi passengers in Gothenburg can now travel in zero-emission hydrogen-powered vehicles, with water as the only by-product. The initiative is a collaboration between hydrogen company Hydri, Taxi Göteborg and Toyota Sweden, aimed at evaluating how hydrogen technology performs in daily operations and contributing to fossil-free taxi transport in Gothenburg.

“Hydri is a Gothenburg-based company, and our first hydrogen refuelling station is located in the port, so it is important for us to help strengthen Gothenburg’s position in fossil-free mobility. We now have the opportunity to see the technology in use in an operation where vehicles cover long distances and high availability is essential. This will provide us with valuable experience,” says Kamilla Björkman, CEO of Hydri.
The hydrogen taxi initiative brings together Toyota Sweden, providing the vehicles and automotive expertise; Hydri, supplying hydrogen and refuelling infrastructure; and Taxi Göteborg, responsible for operating the vehicles in professional taxi services. Eight hydrogen-powered Toyota Mirai vehicles are now operating as part of Taxi Göteborg’s fleet. The cars use fuel cell technology, in which hydrogen is converted into electricity to power the vehicle’s electric motor. During operation, water is the only by-product.

Fast Refuelling and Long Range Make Hydrogen an Attractive Option for Taxi Services
For Taxi Göteborg, the initiative means that member companies will have the opportunity to use hydrogen vehicles in their daily operations. Taxis need to be available for large parts of the day, placing high demands on fast refueling or charging times and long driving range. A hydrogen car is refueled in three minutes and has a range of around 600 kilometers on a single tank, regardless of the outdoor temperature, making hydrogen-powered cars highly interesting for professional taxi operations.
"The hydrogen taxis are now operating in Gothenburg, marking a concrete step in our efforts to achieve fossil-free taxi transport in the city. Taxi services account for a significant number of kilometres driven each year and have great potential to help reduce emissions. We hope that taxi companies across Sweden will be able to learn from and be inspired by this initiative,” says Magnus Klintbäck, CEO of Taxi Göteborg.
